  • Oven - Preheated to 375°F (190°C) for baking.
  • Cooling Rack - To cool the rolls after baking.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 3/4 cup milk or as needed
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter for brushing

Instructions

Preheat the Oven:

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.

Mix Dry Ingredients:

  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together:
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder

Add Wet Ingredients:

  • Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and add 1/2 cup mayonnaise.
  • Gradually pour in 3/4 cup milk while stirring until a soft dough forms. Add more milk if needed, but avoid overmixing.

Shape the Rolls:

  • Divide the dough into 12 equal portions.
  • Roll each portion into a ball and place them on the prepared baking sheet, leaving some space between each roll.

Bake:

  • Bake in the preheated oven for 15–20 minutes, or until the rolls are golden brown on top.

Brush with Butter:

  • Remove the rolls from the oven and immediately brush the tops with 2 tablespoons melted butter for a soft, shiny finish.

Cool and Serve:

  • Transfer the rolls to a cooling rack and let them cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  1. Mayonnaise Substitute:
If you don’t have mayonnaise, you can use sour cream or Greek yogurt as a substitute for a similar texture and richness.
  2. Milk Options:
You can use any type of milk (dairy or non-dairy, like almond or oat milk) depending on your preference.
  3. Flour Variations:
For a healthier twist, you can replace half of the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour. The texture will be slightly denser but still delicious.
  4. Add-Ins:
    Customize your rolls by adding:
    • Herbs (e.g., rosemary, thyme, or chives)
    • Cheese (e.g., grated cheddar or parmesan)
    • Garlic powder or onion powder for extra flavor.
  5. Storage:
    • Store leftover rolls in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
    • To reheat, warm them in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for 5–10 minutes or in the microwave for 10–15 seconds.
  6. Freezing:
    • These rolls freeze well! Wrap them individually in plastic wrap and store in a freezer-safe bag for up to 1 month. Thaw at room temperature or reheat in the oven.
  7. Avoid Overmixing:
Mix the dough just until combined to ensure the rolls stay soft and tender. Overmixing can make them dense.
  8. Serving Suggestions:
    Serve these rolls warm with:
    • Butter or jam for breakfast.
    • Soups or stews as a side.
    • As a base for mini sandwiches.
